Blogging is what is well known as an online diary. It is a very controversial topic of which whether it is good or bad. In my point of view, I sit on the fence.
The pros of blogging is that we are able to bring other people’s attention to issues that are of importance to ourselves. For instance, this topic regarding how good or bad blogging is of importance to me. I decide to blog about it. Thus, I draw people's attention from all over the world to get to understand ow I feel about it. However, in the non-virtual world, I might not be able to voice my thoughts that easily. The blog is like our stage where we get to 'perform' what we want others to see.
There are other pros like we get to practice our writing skills. Is this not the purpose why our English teachers ask us to do online journals instead of using a book?My English teacher did admit that majority of the students did much better writings on their blogs as of comparison to their hand-written ones. Perhaps it is due to the fact that we need not bother about our neatness of handwriting and are able to record down our thoughts much faster and clearer. We would also tend to be more conscious about what we type as we know who are the people that are going to read our blogs.
Furthermore, for those whom are overseas, they are able to keep in contact with their families and friends easily and tell them about their daily life instead of sending an e-mail or via post, telephone or messenger. Where e-mails can easily be deleted within 30 days, letters might get lost and stamps are needed, calls are expensive and they might not be online due to time differences. With a blog, the blogger is able to put up a tag board for others to tag or others could click on the 'comment' URL to leave a note. This is a much more efficient way of allowing others know how the blogger is doing.
Last but not least, it allows us to let our feelings go and allow others to learn more about our personality. It has been scientifically proven that writing or for this case, typing out how we feel about we did or what others did, aid in our mental and physical health as it is similar to having someone who listens to talk to. This way we would not bottle up our feelings.
So those were the pros and now we move on to the cons.
Once again, although the blog might be our place to draw other's attention to ourselves and let them learn and understand us, the ability to bring awareness to important issues can quickly be diluted by a flurry of rants and raves against anything that happens to be bothering you that day. We get carried off easily due to the fact that we simply forget that anyone can get access to your blog.
Secondly, if we are one of those who are not careful with the words that we use to express our feelings, we might end up having angry mobs heading after us. Then, you would have to keep deleting posts and go on end endless train of apologies to others. Others and many people would eventually read your blog so if we are not careful, we might lose our jobs, reputation and the list goes on. There had been many cases of people losing their jobs because of what they typed in their blog. Now that is not a good thing. What if you were the sole breadwinner of the family?. This is not to say that one can’t blog about work, but their self-censor needs to be on long before one write a tirade about how incompetent he or she feel one's colleagues or classmates are and about how the burger in a certain shop has bugs in it. Also, remember that one's kins all have fair access to everything one type.
Last but not least, blogging takes up a lot of time and effort if someone wants solid readership and steady traffic. The blogger would have to blog well and often. This means you would not be able to concentrate much on a healthy lifestyle of staying away from the computer more often.
In conclusion, if we are able to practice self discipline and control while blogging, blogging would then not be a bad thing.
